Merger proposal
[edit]"Provisional Revolutionary Government of the Republic of South Viet-Nam" was an official name of the Vietcong that was used in 1969-76. This article mistakenly assumes that PRG, Republic of South Vietnam, and VC were three distinct entities. If you Google "Republic of South Vietnam", the vast majority of the hits are sources that have miswrote and are in fact referring to the "Republic of Vietnam" (South Vietnam). Using RSV as the name of the 1975-76 government in Saigon appears to be an "invented here" Wikipedia concept. I would suggest discussing military aspects of the group at Viet Cong and moving the material in this article to Provisional Revolutionary Government. This article would then be a redirect to "South Vietnam". Kauffner (talk) 06:27, 28 May 2009 (UTC)
- Strong oppose merger and redirect Republic of South Vietnam to Republic of Vietnam but support change this title's name to Provisional Revolutionary Government of Republic of South Vietnam.
- This was a shadow government of Vietcong which really existed in order to replace, namely, South Vietnam government and make way to the North merge the South legally. Vietcong was front not a government; two organizations, formally, was different (later, Vietcong was merged into Vietnamese Fatherland Front, and Provisional Revolutionary Government of Republic of South Vietnam was merged into Socialist Republic of Vietnam. Moreover, this article should be improved because it said that PRG was existed only in 1975-1976. At last, this Provisional Revolutionary Government was the successor of Republic of Vietnam under the manage of North Vietnam.
- I suggest that you south try a google book search. "Republic of Vietnam" never called themselves "Republic of South Vietnam", confusion could be fixed by putting a template {{confused}}.--Amore Mio (talk) 15:33, 28 May 2009 (UTC)

Requested move
[edit]Provisional Revolutionary Government of Republic of South Vietnam → Provisional Revolutionary Government of the Republic of South Vietnam — I left out a "the" when I did the move, but this can't be fixed without administrator intervention. I propose the article be moved to "Provisional Revolutionary Government of the Republic of South Vietnam". Most writers call this group the "Provisional Revolutionary Government," but I suspect that such a generic, non-descriptive title would mystify many readers. Kauffner (talk) 06:06, 31 May 2009 (UTC)
- For consideration: The original title of the article was Provisional Revolutionary Government of the Republic of South Vietnam. It was renamed Republic of South Vietnam in 2005. Provisional Revolutionary Government of the Republic of South Vietnam info was split off for a time but a unified article was at Republic of South Vietnam from about 2006 to last month.
- Also see discussions of relevant issues in sections above. If this move is approved, perhaps Republic of South Vietnam should be a disambiguation page as suggested above since many sources refer to South Vietnam as the Republic of South Vietnam, albeit mistakenly. — AjaxSmack 19:39, 31 May 2009 (UTC)
- The full requested title is, like the current title, a bit long and clunky. What about "Provisional Revolutionary Government (South Vietnam)" or even, if there's no other "PRG" in Vietnam's history (north, south or unified), "Provisional Revolutionary Government (Vietnam)" Ed Fitzgerald t / c 19:53, 31 May 2009 (UTC)
- There is no other PRG anywhere in the world that is notable enough to be a concern here. There is some discussion by Lenin and Stalin about PRGs in general and their place in Marxist theory, but I have incorporated a section on the issue into this article. So if the are article was moved to "Provisional Revolutionary Government", Lenin could be added to the lede. But otherwise you wouldn't have to need to change much. "Provisional Revolutionary Government" Vietnam certainly gets you way more hits than "Provisional Revolutionary Government of the Republic of South Vietnam" Kauffner (talk) 08:28, 3 June 2009 (UTC)
I support the proposal. It's a definite improvement on the current title, and there seems no disagreement there. Longer term, I'm skeptical that there's a less clunky title that clearly identifies this particular subject. So the question becomes, do we want an article on this exact subject? And I think the answer is again clearly yes. Where work is perhaps required is in the leads, and perhaps scope and even naming, of the more general aticles on Vietnam and its recent history. Andrewa (talk) 15:44, 4 June 2009 (UTC)
- "Clunky" being, of course, a technical term. Ed Fitzgerald t / c 05:03, 5 June 2009 (UTC)
- I disagree with this move (reason explained in #Merger proposal). Republic of Vietnam never called itself Republic of South Vietnam, English-language scholar/writer misunderstood Republic of South Vietnam = Republic of Vietnam because two name were too similar. However, it could be fixed easily by the template {{confused}}.
- Anyway, if Republic of South Vietnam became a disambiguation page, I would not oppose anymore. --Amore Mio (talk) 10:17, 7 June 2009 (UTC)
Economy
[edit]Does anyone know anything about the economy of the south at this time? Enlil Ninlil (talk) 02:07, 23 October 2009 (UTC)
- The business class was sent to reeducation camps. South Vietnam's economy depended on U.S. aid, which of course was cut off in 1974-75. It took until 1990 for the economy to return to the level it was in 1975. Kauffner (talk) 02:55, 23 October 2009 (UTC)
Question
[edit]Population
• 1973 est. 19,370,000 Density 111.4 /km² (288.6 /sq mi)
Did this government control most South Vietnamese population in 1973 ?
Capital
Tây Ninh (1969–74) Sai Gon (1975–76)
And did ARVN lost Tay Ninh province from 1969 to 1974 ? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 113.185.20.25 (talk) 18:49, 20 January 2016 (UTC)

Relevance of section on the history of the term "provisional revolutionary government"
[edit]I would argue that the phrase "provisional revolutionary government" is fairly self-explanatory, and that the current content of this section tracing the term back to 1848, the Bolshevik Revolution, and Algeria is largely irrelevant and should be deleted. Rosguill (talk) 23:14, 15 April 2018 (UTC)
- No response in over two weeks, I have gone ahead and implemented the proposed change.Rosguill (talk) 22:52, 7 May 2018 (UTC)
Link to wrong Nguyễn Văn Kiệt?
[edit]The link for Vice-Chairman and Minister of Education Nguyễn Văn Kiệt is to the page of an officer in the South Vietnamese Navy who won the Navy Cross during the war. This cannot be the same man. Is the name incorrect here, or were there two people with the same name? Molinari (talk) 18:52, 18 May 2018 (UTC)
- Yeah that seems to pretty clearly be the wrong person. I would assume that there were simply two people with that same name, but regardless of the reason for the error, the link should be removed.Rosguill (talk) 22:28, 18 May 2018 (UTC)

Sequencing
[edit]This follows on this edit, which involves replacement of a {{cn}} tag with a {{fv}}. It looks to me as if pages 333, 334, and 339 of the cited source (all previewable online here) date the VANDPF at 1976 and the installation of Nguyễn Hữu Thọ as President of the PRG of SV at 1975.That linked WP article on Thọ says that he was Chairman of the Consultative Council of the Provisional Revolutionary Government of the Republic of South Vietnam from 1969 to 1975 (implying that the PRG of SV existed in 1969) . I'm guessing that the sequencing of this fits together, but the details of that sequencing is not clear to me from the WP articles. Map makes no sense
[edit]The map in the current version makes no sense, the Republic of South Vietnam never claimed the territory of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam, in fact they were their ally. The old map makes much more sense here. --Donald Trung (talk) 11:39, 22 May 2023 (UTC)
National motto of the Republic of South Vietnam in 1976
[edit]The article states that the national motto of the Republic of South Vietnam was Độc lập – Dân chủ – Hòa bình – Trung lập ("Independence – Democracy – Peace – Neutrality"), but on documents written in 1976 they seemed to have switched to Độc lập – Dân chủ – Hòa bình – Thống nhứt ("Independence – Democracy – Peace – Unity").
The replacement of Trung lập with Thống nhứt might have been to openly signal their planned unification with the Democratic Republic of Vietnam. But other than this document I don't really have a secondary or tertiary source to back it up, but someone who is more familiar in this time period might be able to find it. --Donald Trung (talk) 18:56, 11 October 2024 (UTC)
