I found a reference in the Chinese page for the fruit. The famous Chinese poet Su Dongpo (11th century) wrote a poem titled 荔支歎 (the lament of lychee) about lychee and longan being used as annual tributes to the Eastern Han court. "Tributes" means that the fruits were exotic, and the trees did not grow in China of the Han dynasty. Su Dongpo also said that the tributes came from 交州 (Giao Châu in Vietnamese ) and 交州 was the name of present day Vietnam, being a province of China in the 1st and 2nd century. So, longan's origin is in Indochina, not South China. One interesting thing about the fruit is that its name in Vietnamese is a transcription of the Chinese name 龙眼 into Vietnamese (long nhãn) and it appears that nobody knows whether the fruit had a Vietnamese name originally (I am Vietnamese). @MirrordorMirrordor (talk) 16:50, 17 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
In the header 'Longan growth enhancement efforts', when discussing the difference in yields, a study about lychees is quoted. This doesn't seem quite right to me, because while the fruits are related, they are not the same. I'm not sure if this source should be moved or removed, but it certainly isn't where it should be. 62.166.165.86 (talk) 17:54, 27 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
