Category talk:Labor unions
Shouldn't this be moved to "Labour unions" or "Trade unions"? --Soman 11:41, 3 Jan 2005 (UTC)
- At the moment, no. Our article on the subject is at Labor union; the category should be named as to reflect that. (You've just reminded me to move List of trade unions, accordingly, which I meant to do a while back but forgot. That having been said, if you feel strongly that our content on the subject should be under a different title (I have no strong feelings on the matter), please make your case on Talk:Labor union. Note that, per the manual style, text in articles should, whenever possible, pick a usage/spelling based on context. I.e., articles about American unions should always use "labor union". So, since its spelled "Labor" in America and in the rest of the world its called "trade union" = Usage of the American term? Yehaa! --Soman 13:30, 3 Jan 2005 (UTC)
- I didn't say that. I said that we are currently using Labor union, that we should be consistent, and that if you want a change, you should post a note at Talk:Labor union. Please don't put words in my mouth.
- That having been said: "Trade union" is more common around the world, but "labor/labour union" is used at least some places other than the U.S. "Trade union" does have the disadvantage that, to an American, it specifically connotes craft unionism (vs. industrial unionism).

So in this catergory of "labor union" we have sub-catergories Australian trade unions, British trade unions, Canadian trade unions, Indian trade unions, Trade unionists and Trade unions of the Singareni coal fields. And someone was talking about consistency? Jooler 11:51, 31 Jan 2005 (UTC)
- Yes, these are largely consistent, as unions in all of those countries are known as trade unions. The category itself should be moved to Category:Trade unions, but subcats where "labor union" is appropriate, such as Category:United States labor unions, should continue to use that. The only question mark in my mind is Category:German labor unions, for which we probably need some usage guidance from a German English-speaker. RadicalSubversiv E 12:15, 31 Jan 2005 (UTC)
