Love over Gold as Progressive Rock

[edit]

I think the genre should be changed to "Progressive Rock", since it was their attempt, and mostly an accomplished task nihil 01:10, 16 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

  • I will go along, since Prog incorporates Rock in the wikischeme of things. Being primarily a Prog fan means that I like this album better than the jazzier or more rockin' sounds of the earlier and later albums respectively. --Fantailfan 20:40, 18 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Love over GoldLove Over Gold – The correct presentation of the title includes a capital "O", as shown in numerous sources, including AllMusic, Rolling Stone, the CD label, the artist's website, etc. This request is consistent with MOS:CT. Bede735 (talk) 13:02, 4 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hm, I still morally support this move, but according to MOS:CT, "over" (as a prepositions containing four letters or fewer) should not be capitalized. Seems kind of awkward to me, especially considering similar cases like "From dusk till dawn", yet this has support. --87.79.208.25 (talk) 05:41, 6 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Actually, what is the difference between the "over" in this title and e.g. in One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest? Should all those titles be moved to lowercase "over" as well? --213.168.117.64 (talk) 08:01, 8 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, according to our manual of style. Powers T 14:50, 8 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Progressive Rock

[edit]

I'm sorry, buddy, but this album is very far from progressive rock. Mark Knopfler does not have a progressive mind and a progressive style. Long tracks are not enough indication to have progressive rock. Please change the genre indicating only "rock". Do you think in 1981 a progressive rock record could had rankings like this, in every chart? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 79.16.193.51 (talk) 13:40, 22 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Determining genre based on chart performance is rather silly, but yes, for someone to label Love over Gold as progressive rock has to make you suspect that person has no idea what the term progressive rock means. Checking the cited source (which was not in place when the above post was made), it's obvious in context that Allmusic are not calling LoG progressive rock, but simply making a comment on the length of the songs by alluding to a genre which is known for including long songs. "Art rock" is an equally dubious description for LoG, and the cited source's phrasing ("The moment where Dire Straits became an art-rock band.") sounds tongue-in-cheek. Besides, I tend to question the reliability of an article which says LoG has seven songs. I'm going to remove those two genres and add the one which Allmusic categorizes LoG under, pop rock. Private Dancer - cut or recycled?

[edit]

The article states, I assume correctly, that the Knopfler-penned 'Private Dancer' was recorded, complete sans vocals, before it was cut and handed to Tina Turner to make into a hit of her own. However, there's an (unsourced) claim on the article for Private Dancer (Tina Turner song) that "[t]he song shares the same tune as the song 'Love Over Gold' which had been recorded by Dire Straits 2 years previously."

Now, maybe the unsourced claim should be removed from the other article; "shares the same tune" is pretty strong language. But it begs the question: Did Knopfler in fact recycle, if not the whole composition, at least melodic element(s) from the song he gave away? I know the two songs (not that I'd ever clocked a similarity), but for what it's worth, the Talk Page is a bit more circumspect: "The song's chorus has the same melody as the Dire Straits song 'Love over Gold': 'I'm your private dancer, a dancer for money...' 'It's love over gold, and mind over matter...'"

I'm not suggesting this article needs any modification per se. But I am curious for others' thoughts, and/or if anyone knows of any sourcing that might substantiate the claim that, while 'Private Dancer' was clearly cut from the album, a piece of the chorus melody was retained (or was perhaps planned to echo) in LoG's title track.
