How do I add Category:Beat writers to here? --bodnotbod 01:19, Jun 1, 2004 (UTC)

Beat writers would seem like a sensible category. Don't know how to add it though. Somewhere there must exist a thorough discussion and instruction on this 'category' thing. Haven't been able to find it yet. I have been adding category|poet to a number of poets. I'm waiting for someone to tell me to stop. Monk Bretton 01:23, 1 Jun 2004 (UTC)

Please don't go adding category:poet. The convention is to use the plural form category:poets.--[[User:HamYoyo|HamYoyo (Talk)]] 07:47, Jun 1, 2004 (UTC)
Sorry I missed off the s in the typing above but not in the categories I added, if you follow me. I am confusing myself. And now I see a new category 'British Poets' has cropped up. Next week it will be something else. Monk Bretton 14:07, 24 Jun 2004 (UTC)

If you are in doubt if a genre or any writing category should exist, check Lists of authors first. If it is there, definately add it! The list there is good, but not necessarily comprehensive. You should probably read instructions in Wikipedia:Categorization and m:MediaWiki User's Guide: Using Categories which both have helpful hints. It will take a while to fully categorize all the articles that deserve it, so any work you do will certainly help! --ssd 05:12, 1 Jun 2004 (UTC)

Any suggestion on what to call writers who write cookbooks and/or books about cooking, such as James Beard? There's nothing on List of authors and "Cooking writers" doesn't sound right. Elf | Talk 01:16, 18 Aug 2004 (UTC)
Food writers. --Jerzy(t) 21:45, 2004 Aug 26 (UTC)

IMO, besides being imprecise, "genre" ignores the need to divide writers hierarchically.
Say something like:

  • Writers
    • Lists of writers
    • Writer stubs
    • Writers by award
    • Writers by nationality
    • Writers by personal characteristic
    • Writers by form or field
      • Journalists
        • Advice columnists
        • Critics
      • Lexicographers
      • Fiction writers
        • Writers by fiction area
          • SF writers

...

I like it. But what do you mean by "by personal characteristic"? Examples? Never mind; found it by going up one level to Category:Writers. Elf | Talk 23:10, 26 Aug 2004 (UTC)

Should this category be removed?

[edit]

I don't see the point of this subcategory - it just makes the subsubcategories harder to find. Why can't they all be subcategories of Writers?--Henrygb 11:35, 8 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I feel the same way. Shawnc 08:48, 12 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

For fiction

[edit]

There's already a Category:Writers by fiction subject area; just fyi. Cheers, Her Pegship 16:59, 10 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
