[edit]According to Alcock and Brown page, 1890 miles (3040 km), not 1980 miles. I've found, that most Internet sites give 1890 BUT the New York Times header said 1980! Where's the error?(http://ngb.chebucto.org/Articles/sjc-alcock-and-brown.shtml) Pibwl 12:01, 22 Nov 2004 (UTC)
Medal of Honor
[edit]I revamped the page and removed mentions of the Medal of Honor. The reference -http://www.flightglobal.com/pdfarchive/view/1919/1919%20-%200805.html - used does mention the Medal of Honor but I cannot find any more information that it was actually conferred on Alcock (or Brown). It looks like this was a request that was not followed through on.Londonclanger (talk) 10:30, 13 September 2013 (UTC)

Rank
[edit]His gravestone says he was Flight-Commander, not Captain. There is a chance he served as Acting Captain but both his nephews (one now dead, the other a neighbour of mine for 50-odd years) insist he was F-C and have primary documentation to support it. - Sitush (talk) 18:19, 4 September 2021 (UTC)
- Is Flight Commander - Royal Navy Air Service equivalent of RAF Captain and I don't know what would happen with ranks on merging of RNAS and RFC in 1919 to make RAF ? Best wishes, (Msrasnw (talk) 16:06, 5 September 2021 (UTC)) PS: Went past the monument not so long ago on one of my few trips out! PPS: This is supportive of this: RAF_officer_ranks#Timeline_of_changes ....PPPs: I looked on here https://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/D8186679 and did the preview and Zoom it seems to have under Rank on the first page Lt. (Temp Capt) but is a bit blurry.... The Birth Date also seems to be 6/11/1891....
- No idea how the ranks worked, sorry. I just know what the gravestone/memorial says + family paperwork. There is/was a statue at Manchester Airport commemorating them also - I remember seeing it as a kid, back in the days before parking there required a second mortgage. - Sitush (talk) 04:07, 7 September 2021 (UTC)
- This I think might be a similar case: Thomas_Le_Mesurier_(RAF_officer)... "On 1 April 1918 the Royal Naval Air Service (RNAS) and the Army's Royal Flying Corps (RFC) were merged to form the Royal Air Force, and Le Mesurier's rank of flight commander was converted to the RAF equivalent of captain." And the note on his DSC says Lieutenant (temporary Captain) Thomas Frederick Le Mesurier, DSC, RAF. (21 June 1918) which is what seems to say on Alcock's service record: Lt. (Temp Capt).
