Animal Farm
Does this mean I can delete Animal Farm (Full Story) safely as it can't improve? We have Animal Farm already. -- Mgm|(talk) 13:42, Dec 2, 2004 (UTC)
- No, normally copyright violations should be listed on Wikipedia:Copyright problems, and then will be deleted after one week. I am not sure if it has a shortcut for 100% clear cases. andy 13:45, 2 Dec 2004 (UTC)
Thanks for the welcome
Andy thanks for your welcoming words. I'm quite new at wikipedia and am constantly amazed at the quality. I cannot comprehend how such a work of art can be open to all and not be vandalised constantly. --Woodstone 22:17, 2004 Dec 7 (UTC)
Hello Andy
I will react later to your comments on my talkpage. I came back in BKK last week and found myself piled in work with the comedygroup I play in. Seems we finally made our big breakthrough! Waerth 23:09, 7 Dec 2004 (UTC)
Request from admin
Hi. I'd like to request that User: Robert the Bruce be temporarily blocked for violation of the Three Revert Rule, per Wikipedia:Three revert rule, for his reverts on Foreskin restoration (see that page's edit history for details). Though his reverts are relatively minor, they still represent an attempt to push a particular point of view in spite of opposition from other frequent editors of the article; his edit summaries also indicate that he's well aware of the 3RR.
I would block him myself, but am a contributor to the article. Thanks

Lam%e9%27s_Special_Quartic deletion
Hi Andy. I got your message about the deletion of Lame's Special Quartic, but the problem still seems to remain. On the page Category:Mathematics, there is a broken link to the non-existant article. No one can seem to fix it, since it is automatically generated. Any ideas? Sean Kelly 18:33, 9 Dec 2004 (UTC)
- I see, now I understand that's why you created it, I thought it was just a normal test for a new article creation. There seems to be an article in the database which isn't accessible in any normal way, so it seems only a developer with direct connection to the database can locate and remove it. I have put a note on m:Non-development tasks for developers, then someone will look into it. andy 21:44, 9 Dec 2004 (UTC)

RFC pages on VfD
Should RFC pages be placed on VfD to be deleted? I'm considering removing Wikipedia:Requests for comment/Slrubenstein, Wikipedia:Requests for comment/Jwrosenzweig and Wikipedia:Requests for comment/John Kenney from WP:VFD. Each of them was listed by CheeseDreams. Your comments on whether I should do this would be appreciated. - Ta bu shi da yu 03:15, 10 Dec 2004 (UTC)

New version of MediaWIki
When will the Englsih WP (ie this) upgrade to MediaWiki 1.4? And will this be the version where one can "patrol" an edit? Also, why is WP so slow? Please reply on my talkpage.--Honeycake (please reply on my talkpage!!) 18:01, 10 Dec 2004 (UTC)
Hello Andy, Do you have any news on why Wiki continues to be so slow? (Do you think there should be some sort of announcement on the main page, warning users of this). I saw your comment regarding the replacement of 5 Apache servers, and tried to check vie your statistics link , but it seems to be off the air, or overloaded at the moment. Wikityke

- I usually do, but lately the garbage ratio is getting so high and the website is so slow I cannot follow it all the time. And if the test page is a bit older already the note doesn't make that much sense anymore, as it will probably reach someone else who get the IP later. andy 18:31, 14 Dec 2004 (UTC)

Energy Development and Hubbert's Peak Theory
There is a little storm brewing at Hubbert peak concerning, well, many things. But currently concerning how to organize information concerning future development of energy schemes (phrased as "Oil Alternatives" or "Future energy development" depending on whom you ask). As you might guess, Hubbert Peak is an article that might be expected to draw a lot of public interest and heat; Energy development is not. We could use your input regarding how to proceed. Double block
Heya, please note Theresa Knott and you both blocked 144.92.184.25, giving him double block time (I think). Not that that's necessarily a bad thing. --fvw* 23:13, 2004 Dec 16 (UTC)
- Does it double? Don't know about that... Sometimes I have to block a second time as the first block apparently didn't take action, never knew blocks accumulate, I would imagine that simply the latest block is the one which counts. The only sad thing is that her blocking overwrote my blocking comment to that vandal :-) Somehow tonight is rather busy with vandals, I have been reverting nonsense edits for two hours already. But now it's time to go to bed for me. andy 23:17, 16 Dec 2004 (UTC)
- No it doesn't. I'm pretty sure that when the first block runs ( or the shorter one) out the IP is unblocked. Theresa Knott (The snott rake) 23:34, 16 Dec 2004 (UTC)
UN/LOCODE
I am talking with User:Ram-Man about inserting shortcuts for cities in wikipedia. This way, people from outside would have a standard way to link to cities. I think I saw you a lot on ISO 3166-2 pages, especially on TH, so maybe you can have a look over Talk:UN/LOCODE to detect error or give hints. Regards Tobias Conradi 20:40, 18 Dec 2004 (UTC)
- Yes, I am mostly active at the Thailand stuff, but sometimes I'm doing some cleanup in the other countries as well. Having a simple geocode redirect might be handy in some cases - especially if there are several romanizated name versions around, however at least for Thailand UN/LOCODE is quite incomplete, it just has the real big towns (the provincial capitals), but smaller towns like Chaiya are already missing. andy 21:37, 18 Dec 2004 (UTC)
test3
I choose the number a bit by feeling according to the kind of vandalism and its persistence. If someone just adds an Image:Example.jpg, that's definitely just a test. If someone add "%Classmate% is gay", that's more like a 2, and if that one is done again after being removed before I may go directly to 3. Maybe I am sometimes a bit fast to go to the higher levels, but especially if its a vandal rush hour I prefer to get the RC manageable than to make sure no potential contributor is scared away. But I am quite sure other Admins have their own way how to treat the vandals. andy 21:24, 18 Dec 2004 (UTC)
- Ah, ok. It wasn't intended as criticism or anything, just making conversation (think of it as the equivalent of "nice weather today, innit?"). RC patrol can be lonely work *sniggers*. --fvw* 21:26, 2004 Dec 18 (UTC)
Thai provinces - thanks
I recently compaleted Thai provinces based on your work - as you may know. BTW, The reputation for the articles of the provinces is quite good in ja: even in 2ch. I was also really happy and quite interested in your work in my translation work. I really appriciate and praise you. See you. --Ramendra 08:23, 19 Dec 2004 (UTC)
- Thanks a lot for your appraisal, it really makes me happy to see my work to be so much appreciated. But of course the articles are still far from being perfect - some have none or only a very short history or geography section, the provincial flags are still missing as well as the provincial slogans. So the articles still need work, hopefully you'll add some more facts sometime as well. andy 14:13, 19 Dec 2004 (UTC)
Block on 62.255.64.4
Hey :)
Just letting you know about the block you placed on 62.255.64.4 (21:13, 18 Dec 2004), which is a web cache owned by one of the largest ISPs (NTL) in the UK. I don't know if it affects their users directly (I don't know any), but it affects some popular ISPs (e.g. Tesco) who resell their services, cutting out more than just that one person! --DomCleal 15:23, Dec 19, 2004 (UTC)

And of course it's fine if you do the work on nl, I have still enough things to edit here and upload to commons... Liberal Party of Canada conventions
Hi, I'm hoping you can help clean up the mess that I have created. I was trying to create a standard format for titles of articles about Canadian political party leadership conventions. Specifically, I was trying to follow the format that has been adopted for Canadian elections, i.e., putting the year at the end, so: "Party Name leadership convention, YYYY". Also, "leadership race" is too colloquial for an encyclopedia. The problem is that I did not know how to "move" an article, and was cutting and pasting the text into the new article. The author of the Liberal Party of Canada leadership convention, 1968 article, who had originally created the article as "1968 Liberal Party of Canada leadership race", reverted my edit, and scolded me for my bad redirection. I have now learned how to move an article, and the original author has now agreed with my suggestion for re-naming of the article, and has completed the move. I was trying to correct my mistake on 2003 Liberal Party of Canada leadership race, but I am unable to move it to Liberal Party of Canada leadership convention, 2003 because that article already exists, even though it is blank. Can you tell me how to move the article? I would be very grateful for your help in this matter. Kevintoronto 22:38, 3 Feb 2005 (UTC)
- Fixed - as an admin I can delete article, so I delete the one which blocked the page move. And after the deletion I have done the move now as well. If you come across such a problem in future - simply list it in Wikipedia:Requested moves. andy 22:44, 3 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Vandalism reverts
I've started to watch recent changes for vandalism, and noticed that the summary for reverts is a form. Is there a template/string that gets replaced, like four twiddles, or is it all manual? Mcpusc 12:54, 8 Feb 2005 (UTC)
- No, if you do the revert manually you have to type text on your own. The text you often see in Recent Changes "Reverted edits by XXX to last version by YYY" is an automatic text, which appears when an administrator uses the "rollback" link only available to administrators - that button makes the revert easier, especially to clean up after a more active vandal. andy 13:01, 8 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Hello, I'm wondering what relics there are of the Frankish Empire. What architecture and museum-level pieces remain? I understand that Charlemagne's tomb lies in his cathedral, but what about the palaces? Where are those? Borderer 02:21, 11 Feb 2005 (UTC)
- The main relic is of course the cathedral, while there are no remains of the palace (Kaiserpfalz). The town hall (Rathaus) was built on top of what was part of the palace in the 14th century, when the palace was in ruins due to neglect. The museum of the cathedral (Domschatzkammer) has some remains of the times of Charlemagne, but also of later times. The city museum at the Frankenberg castle ( Museum Burg Frankenberg) would also be worth a visit, however due to lack of funds its opening hours are a shame - just 3 hours on Sundays around lunch time. I haven't been there yet. andy 17:20, 12 Feb 2005 (UTC)
Andy, thank you very much! :) What are the locations of those lost buildings? All in Aachen? I was wondering if the Holy Roman Empire was supposed to be inclusive for the whole of Western Europe, such as unofficially having traditionally independent places as England and other Catholic lands as subdivisions during that time. The reason being, that there was only one emperor during those times(in the West) and only after Protestantism did multiple emperors become a feature of Western Europe. Was the King of England a Sovereign during the time predating the Anglican schism, or was he subordinate to the Holy Roman Emperor? I postulate this, due to the fact that the Cardinals and Archbishops were subordinate to the Pope and figured that there's some part of history not being told to enough children. Wouldn't that be a reason to break with the Vatican back then? Once Henry broke with the Church, he was able to incorporate Wales and the Royal House changed from province to surname. I was thinking that the provincial royal house like Anjou, Blois or Normandy is a Continental style. Once England broke away, they went to personal names like Tudor and Stuart...even though Henry was technically of the House of Richmond. Once England had become the center of another empire, just of its own, they reverted to usage of provincial houses like Hanover and Saxe-Coburg-Gotha. So, what do you think...Am I right? Borderer 01:10, 20 Feb 2005 (UTC)
Introduction
Thanks for cleaning that up; I tried to revert it myself, but the edit page was coming up blank -- which may explain how it got that way in the first place. I inquired on IRC, but no one who might have an idea why that might have happened seemed to be around. --Baylink 17:04, 11 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Irish trad music
Hi, just got a message saying I should comment on a talk page about the above subject. However I disagree completely with the author's view of irish trad so would like to delete everything on that page. What is the point of talking about it when I consider everything on that page to be incorrect? Somehow we get redirected from the old trad music page (don't know whether the current author did that). If he wants a generic "irish music" page then let him have one. But someone so untutored in trad music should not be the sole proprietor of that page. How do we resolve this conflict, allowing me to point out to new users where the text is wrong? Can I start a separate "trad music only" page and take away the redirect?

The House of Dolls back to Joy Division (World War II) ?
Taghawi-Nejad moved Joy Division (World War II) to The House of Dolls to reflect his personal belief that the Joy Divisions never existed in reality and were purely a fictional creation of The House of Dolls. I can't move it back over the redirect; would you? -- Antaeus Feldspar 18:51, 19 Feb 2005 (UTC)
- It should be possible to move it back without problems - as long as the auto-created redirect has no other editing history it's still possible without admin interaction. BTW: There's also Wikipedia:Requested moves for those cases where a move isn't possible without admin interaction. andy 18:55, 19 Feb 2005 (UTC)
- Ah! I didn't realize that was possible; I thought that only admins could move an article to a name where another article existed (even if it was the auto-created redirect). Thank you for setting me straight! -- Antaeus Feldspar 19:09, 19 Feb 2005 (UTC)
Yellow Mexico Maps
Hi Ahoerstemeier,
Why exactly did you choose yellow for the localization maps of Mexican States, and other countries territories? Do you mind if I change this to the semi-standard grey? I personally dislike the yellow version.
--Jacobolus 22:28, 19 Feb 2005 (UTC)
- The yellow was originally chosen because before those maps I worked on the Districts of Germany, where the colors were chosen like that. However being dissatisfied with the various color scheme in use, the (rather dormant) Wikiproject Maps was created and yet another color scheme was developed. I'd suggest to use those colors as all new maps I create in that scheme as well; however then I'd have to recreate the map template as the current one does not include the neighboring countries. andy 22:33, 19 Feb 2005 (UTC)
km2
You wrote: Are you using an old Internet Explorer for Mac? It seems your browser destroys km2 (km²) in case the square is done with the direct character.
- I am using an old version of IE with a mac - I didn't realise anything was happening with km². I haven't noticed that happen anywhere, but I'll watch out for it in future - sorry! I didn't even realise there was a direct character - I thought that square was always done by either ² or 2. Grutness|hello?
It seems that the Mac charset does not contain that character, and IE for Mac only understands characters in that Mac charset...Maybe you should try to switch to Mozilla... And besides Mozilla is IMHO better than IE
- You're not wrong there, from what I've seen of it. Or maybe I should go back to Netscape, which was also far better. I may well change - if I can persuade others around here that it's a good idea to do so. Grutness|hello? 10:24, 20 Feb 2005 (UTC)
Samut Prakan
How do you like: nl:Changwat Samut Prakan new style Waerth 12:32, 20 Feb 2005 (UTC)
- Looks good. Just on my laptop the tambon table is a little bit too wide and thus covers a little bit of the infobox. But you simply have to write some more text, then it will move down enough to have no problem anymore :-) andy 12:37, 20 Feb 2005 (UTC)
- I made some minor changes, made the text a bit smaller in the templates (text size = 85%) to get it a bit smaller. Also added 3 rows to changwat template, an idea stolen from the Brazil templates on nl: . I also changed the background colour of the intro part from very light purple into very light grey .... I like that as it makes people see that that is a seperate part from the rest of the article. Now lets add some info! Waerth 06:54, 21 Feb 2005 (UTC)

- But it'll be a tedious work to keep it up to date - often the governours are in office just for one year, and changed so easily when they disagree with the central government. And without being able to read Thai websites it'd be nearly impossible to be up-to-date. andy 20:24, 21 Feb 2005 (UTC)
- I know but still we would have it for our countries ... for our provinces. It might be tedious and not kep up to date but so are many things .... that is not an excuse. The only excuse I have is that I cannot find a list for now. Waerth 10:57, 23 Feb 2005 (UTC)
- You can compile that list from the province websites, those are usually up-to-date. The only difficulty is to find the list, as it's usually only at the Thai part of the website (and often there is no English part at all). For a start - here is the list of governors of Surat Thani province. andy 12:03, 23 Feb 2005 (UTC)

- I have found the list you were searching for at the Ministry of Interior. Relatively easy to find with Google once you know ผู้ว่าราชการจังหวัด means governor - just scroll down that page till it say "75 provinces" :-) Now you just need to transcribe those Thai names - maybe with the online transcription service. I guess I will add a new column in my master excel sheet in the next days. andy 17:10, 24 Feb 2005 (UTC)
You should add it to your watchlist. -- 01:16, 24 Feb 2005 (UTC)
- Hmmm, yes, or I should finally move it to commons, where most of the photos reside already anyway. But it was just a simple blanking, I can think of nastier vandalism... But thanks for fixing it. andy

Vandalism to Pottery
Thanks for being so quick on the revert to Pottery on 3 March 05. This article has seen several vandals, big and little, in a relatively short time. Appreciate your vigilance. WBardwin 11:03, 3 Mar 2005 (UTC)
help needed ISO_3166-2:TH / romanization
hi andy, I think every province has a page, but on ISO_3166-2:TH some are read. I do not know which spelling is correct. Even if ISO is wrong, this should remain in the list , maybe with a note that this is spelled after an unusual romanization. I think you are better in this than me. I also moved all but two province-page from Something_province to Something_Province. I do not know which method is really better, but it seemed more common to use uppercase. For other countries it is mostly uppercase. As well it is common to say Some_River not Some_river. New York City, beeing another example. Tobias Conradi 00:02, 4 Mar 2005 (UTC)
- thx for your help :-) Phil is doing some nice reorganisation in ISO 3166-2 - do you thin haveing the codes bold is good? I do not like it. I already asked him as well Tobias Conradi 18:37, 5 Mar 2005 (UTC)
- Someburi vs Some Buri? There are differences, these also exist on offical thai pages. -> What to do? Tobias Conradi 19:05, 5 Mar 2005 (UTC)
- The romanization of Thai names is a pain, there are lots of different schemes, and even though there is one official scheme (which has many weaknesses, see Royal Thai General System of Transcription) by far not all texts from government follow it - especially on websites. There is a list of recommended spellings, yet I somehow cannot find the link right now, but at least for the letters I think I have followed that list. I don't know by which rule the buri (which means town) is spelled with blank or without, it's confusing me as well. As soon as I find that list again I will check again if I did all spelling correctly... andy 19:27, 5 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Deleted Image
Hi Ahoerstemeier, I think you've deleted Image:Autofellatio.jpg by accident. From the deletion log:

Perhaps someone used it as part of a vandalism campaign? In any case, there has been quite some controversy over this image. (For example, see Image_talk:Autofellatio.jpg, Talk:Autofellatio, etc.) It went through IfD and was kept, and then was decided to be linked to at autofellatio. Could you promptly re-upload it? Thanks, TIMBO (T A L K) 01:25, 9 Mar 2005 (UTC)
- Yes, I deleted it in error, I was trying to fix vandalism which was done by sneaky redirects to that image, and did not notice it was the image page I was seeing, not a page using the image, and when I noticed it the deletion was already done. See also Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/Incidents#User:Eye-laser.net. I don't have that image so I cannot reupload it, nor do I think such a porn image belongs here, but I know it survived the Ifd. However that image was ONLY used for vandalism so far, not in any article. andy 08:26, 9 Mar 2005 (UTC)
- Actually, the image was being used at autofellatio with the linkimage template. That's why it didn't show up on What Links Here, if you tried it. The picture has been the subject of voluminous discussion, and while you're welcome to disapprove of it, you cannot simply delete it and be done with it. Please re-upload it as soon as possible. Thanks, TIMBO (T A L K) 20:55, 9 Mar 2005 (UTC)
It apparently is still being used for vandalism. It appeared on my talk page - put there by .melusin as a redirect, replacing the welcome message. I found it at work - I could have been in big trouble (even lost my job) if someone had seen it on my screen.
Thanks for reverting the message so quickly.

"Projet Thaïlande" on French Wikipedia
Hi. You might be interested to know that I have just launched a 'Thailand' project on the French Wikipedia. Feel free to visit and snoop around — even if you don't speak French. Any idea and suggestion will be more than welcome. Take care.
Oxag (discuss) 08:52, 11 Mar 2005 (UTC)
- Bonjour. Of course I am interested. But my french is very very limited - when reading french texts I can guess some of the meaning with what is left of the Latin I learned it school. So the only thing I can do is adding interwiki's. I'll post something at the project discussion later, to help the coordination with us here at the english WP. BTW: I have copied your invitation to the Wikipedia:Thailand-related topics notice board. andy 12:07, 11 Mar 2005 (UTC)
Thanks Andy
Thanks Andy for the kind introduction to wikipedia. I have been on wiki systems before, but this is the best one.

Crodan block
I really like the reason you gave for blocking User:Crodan. It sums up his behavior nicely. :D – ClockworkSoul 22:12, 18 Mar 2005 (UTC)
User: 62.255.64.9 block
I unblocked this chap because it's a NTL proxy used by rather a lot of users (myself included). Please remember to check the proxies list on the right hand side of the block page. --Tony Sidaway|Talk 22:44, 18 Mar 2005 (UTC)
- PS: I'm sorry, in retrospect I think that sounded too harsh. I just wanted it to be a polite reminder. I find it difficult sometimes to get my head around the IP numbers so I know it isn't a big deal to miss a thing like that. --Tony Sidaway|Talk 02:21, 19 Mar 2005 (UTC)
Thailand pages on fr:
Hi ! Just wanted to say thank you for all those interwiki links you keep adding on our Thailand pages. I will soon be away on holidays so I will calm down and stop creating so many pages. That'll give you an opportunity to breathe for a while. All the provinces and capital cities pages have now been created (and visited by you) anyway... Thanks again. Take care. — Oxag 13:52, 21 Mar 2005 (UTC) (It seems there is a User:Oxag on en: but it is not me. I'm only on fr:)
- Apparently that user account was just used yesterday for a sick vandalism run, and now blocked indefinitely, so you're one day late to register it. Anyway, I am nearly through with adding the interwikis for the provinces, but not for the cities yet - those are ugly stubs here anyway as well. However I am a bit disappointed that you didn't add the interwikis at least on the french site when you created those stubs. andy 19:51, 21 Mar 2005 (UTC)
To tell you the truth, I did not even think about it. I was far too engrossed in the creation of the 150+ pages, their relevant models and the statistics for each province (which took me ages), and I must admit the interwiki thing did not even cross my mind. Shame on me. I think I'll go and bury myself in the backgarden... :)
On a more serious note, on en: the names of Thai provinces seem to be somewhat inconsistant. All the buri-s are written in a single word (ie, Lopburi, Suphanburi...) except Sing Buri which for no obvious reason is spelt in two. Nakhon Si Thammarat has a space between the Si and the Thammarat but Sisaket has not. Same with Nong Khai and Nongbua Lamphu. If you have time to correct that... — Oxag 01:59, 22 Mar 2005 (UTC)
- The transliteration of Thai is a pain - I followed the Royal Thai Institute, but which names to be spelling in one word or two there seem to be different ways. I cannot find the list I used anymore, [1] is one which conflicts a bit with some spellings I used. andy 13:00, 22 Mar 2005 (UTC)
Rafflesia
Saw your query about rafflesia in Khao Sok- I've been studying them for 7 years there. I've found them blooming from October through March. There are about 8-10 sites around Khao sok where they can be found some are 45 minute walks others are several hours. If you want more information e-mail me at akbeeman2000_at_yahoo.com as I'm new to this wikipedia page (first time) I'm not sure how to send messages, Regards Steve
- Thanks a lot for that info, so I was there at the right time in January this year, but just wasn't lucky. As most of my trips to Thailand were at around that time I will try if I can see one next time. One of the reasons I want to see them in nature is of course to create a free photo to illustrate the Rafflesia article... andy 22:49, 22 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Gestalt Therapy
I did a search on Gestalt Therapy before I posted the article and nothing came up, which is why I did the search. If I had seen an article on gestalt then I would not have input my piece, as I did not input my piece on frued, jung or lacan. If you don't like my article then feel free to vote for it to be deleted.

Cheeses...
Hi Ahoerstemeier — did you not look at the page history before deleting Cheeses...? If you had, you would have noticed that I had been trying (unsuccessfully) to get it to redirect to Cheeses%85%28of_Nazereth%29 and was still working on it (my last edit came back with an error because the article I had been working on had suddenly dropped out from under me).
If you could help though, it would be much appreciated — User:Sarg had asked for my help and I wasn't able to do much. 1) The page Wikipedia:Votes for deletion/Cheeses%85 doesn't seem to link from Wikipedia:Votes for deletion/Log/2005 March 31, even though it seems to be correctly listed using . 2) I couldn't create a redirect from Cheeses... to Cheeses%85%28of_Nazereth%29: the page saved correctly but had as its content "1. REDIRECT Cheeses%85%28of_Nazereth%29" instead of the little redirect symbol (and thus did not function as a redirect). There seem to be errors caused by the use of the ellipsis symbil (%85) in the article title.
Any help would be appreciated. — Asbestos | Talk 14:34, 31 Mar 2005 (UTC)
- Sorry, I only saw that redirect with a red link, thus redirecting into nothing. I already undeleted it now, and made the redirect work - you have to write the characters, not the encoded characters like they show in the URL, that's why it did not behave as a redirect. And apparently one dot was missing as well. andy 14:57, 31 Mar 2005 (UTC)
