- 1851 – The Grand Duchy of Baden State Railway, now part of the Rheintalbahn in Germany, inaugurates passenger train service between Efringen-Kirchen and Haltingen.
- 1912 – Florida East Coast Railway opens the Key West Extension in Florida.[1]
- 1949 – The American Freedom Train tour, carrying the original versions of the United States Constitution, Declaration of Independence and the Bill of Rights, officially ends in Washington, D.C.
- 1956 – Santa Fe Railroad's San Diegan passenger train (pictured) derails just outside Los Angeles Union Passenger Terminal. The accident is announced over the radio and so many doctors, nurses and sightseers drive to the scene that it causes one of the first Sig Alerts.
