NPOV: racial motivations
[edit]I am concerned that the following statements in this section about the reasons for the changes in political structure are not backed up with references:
"The Town of Poquoson was formally incorporated in 1952, around the same time that York County began integrating the public school system, when a referendum, drafted to avoid such action, enabled Poquoson to establish its own public school system. The town became an independent city in 1975 in order to maintain this status."
I think that teh way it is worded, we are stating that the reasons were racially motivated without providing proper sources. IMHO, that amounts to a WP NPOV violation. Therefore, I am removing same, and replacing with the more bland statemenst for the city's own website, which is cited in the article. I say, for now, let's not bad mouth the city's history with undocumented accusations. Vaoverland
Growing up in York County, I was told by teachers (long time county residents) and others that the incorporation was racially motivated. My impression was that this belief was generally accepted as conventional wisdom. There was plenty of circumstantial evidence to support this belief - the racial makeup of the city, the exclusion of the black areas of Tabb during incorporation, etc. If it is true, it would be a pity if we could not find any sources (I have been unlucky so far). At this point, the original statement would be more of an example of original research than of a POV statement. --Cy jvb 14:05, 30 March 2007 (UTC)
Agreed, I have heard those same stories and I grew up in Poquoson. 72.205.41.204 02:31, 3 April 2007 (UTC)
I have lived here for many years and our History Teacher, life long resident of the city says that the Move was racially motivated. This can esaily be proved by looking at how the city lines are drawn to cut out carries chapel a predominantly black community at the time of formation. 137.45.48.246 02:57, 8 September 2007 (UTC)
My family is one of the original founding families of Poquoson, and my great-uncle was the second mayor of the city. We asked the black areas of York County that surround the city limits if they wanted to be a part of the city, and they thought that they would have better services if they remained part of the county. So no racial motivation for the split. Will (talk) 04:51, 13 August 2012 (UTC)
- This is what my family has told me as well, that York County chose the line. I have recently polled citizens that were alive during the 1952 transition and updated the article.
According to the Poquoson web site, [The southern portion of the Poquoson District in York County was incorporated in 1952 to retain control over its schools. Trying to pretend this isn't racially motivated as an attempt to head off desegregation is to turn a blind eye to the issues of the time. Mbroooks (talk) 18:19, 16 June 2020 (UTC)
Question?
[edit]I know the area and have a question. Does anyone know why Poquoson chose a bull as their mascot. Or if the reason is other than the mascot, why Poquoson became known as Bull Island? —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 68.10.186.175 (talk) 01:08, 28 March 2007 (UTC).
- I have nothing to back this up but folks from around town told me that there is a legend that someone was traveling up somewhere on the Poquoson River and saw a bull on an island...hence the name.Chrisfortier 21:30, 21 April 2007 (UTC)

I haven't heard that but it makes sense, thanks for replying.
