- 1830 – The Baltimore and Ohio Railroad completes construction on the line between Baltimore and Endicott's Mills, Maryland.
- 1915 – In the Quintinshill rail crash, four trains collide causing more than 200 fatalities near Gretna Green, Scotland; the accident is found to be the result of non-standard operating practices during a shift change at a busy junction.
- 1941 – Canadian Pacific Railway's Angus Shops in Montreal produces its first tank as part of the war effort for World War II.[1]
- 1992 – French and German officials agree on a plan for TGV (pictured) service between Paris, Berlin and Munich.
