Hello Abelson and welcome to Wikipedia! Hope you like it here, and stick around.

Here are some tips to help you get started:

Good luck!

Java

[edit]

Hi. Please disambiguate "Java" on your user page. For example, Java. Thanks. RedWolf 22:18, Aug 4, 2004 (UTC)

Please do not remove VFD notices.

[edit]

Regarding Cash is king, please do not remove VFD notices while discussion is ongoing, as the notice itself requests. These templates are designed to alert readers that the article may be removed, so that they may express any opinion they have about it. - RedWordSmith 17:11, 29 Sep 2004 (UTC)

Article Licensing

[edit]

Hi, I've started a drive to get users to multi-license all of their contributions that they've made to either (1) all U.S. state, county, and city articles or (2) all articles, using the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike (CC-by-sa) v1.0 and v2.0 Licenses or into the public domain if they prefer. The CC-by-sa license is a true free documentation license that is similar to Wikipedia's license, the GFDL, but it allows other projects, such as WikiTravel, to use our articles. Since you are among the top 2000 Wikipedians by edits, I was wondering if you would be willing to multi-license all of your contributions or at minimum those on the geographic articles. Over 90% of people asked have agreed. For More Information:

To allow us to track those users who muli-license their contributions, many users copy and paste the "DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual" template into their user page, but there are other options at Template messages/User namespace. The following examples could also copied and pasted into your user page:

Option 1
I agree to multi-license all my contributions, with the exception of my user pages, as described below:
DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual

OR

Option 2
I agree to multi-license all my contributions to any U.S. state, county, or city article as described below:
DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual

Or if you wanted to place your work into the public domain, you could replace "DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual" with "MultiLicensePD". If you only prefer using the GFDL, I would like to know that too. Please let me know what you think at my talk page. It's important to know either way so no one keeps asking. -- Ram-Man (comment| talk)

Simpsons image

[edit]

I tried to upload a better screenshot for Bart Gets an Elephant, but it didn't seem to work. So I've uploaded it to Image:Stampy the elephant.JPG. --Raging Bull 6 July 2005 05:07 (UTC)

Great! Thanks. I've replace the image on Stampy and added it to Bart Gets an Elephant. abelson July 6, 2005 07:21 (UTC)

Palm Springs

[edit]

Hi! I wrote or expanded most of the Coachella Valley-related articles. That Palm Springs article really looks thin. I had no idea (blush)! FYI, I work in Palm Springs. Downtown is quite unique as are the rather commanding views of Mount San Jacinto and Mount San Gorgonio. Lots and lots of mid-century architecture, too. Please drop me a line with photo requests. - Lucky 6.9 7 July 2005 06:23 (UTC)

Battlefield 2: Modern Combat

Stub messages, and a page that might interest you

[edit]

Hi! I've seen quite a lot of pages carrying double stub messages, so I don't think it's a problem. It might be useful. (But I do long for a better working category system...) Another thing: You might be interested in checking out Swedish Wikipedians' notice board, in case you haven't noticed it. This is intended as an information hub for Sweden-related matters on Wikipedia. We keep a list of requested articles and post news about discussions, debates and votes on Swedish-related matters. It is rather active. Feel free to have a look, and possibly watch the page for updates. / Alarm 18:25, 31 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Desmond

[edit]

Did you really change Desmond to redirect from County Desmond to Characters of Lost on the basis that there is a minor character on Lost named "Desmond"? This seems like something which ought, at the least, to have been discussed before being done. I have returned it to its previous state. john k 23:23, 14 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for doing an article on The Pilgrim's Progress (opera)

[edit]

Dear Abelson, thank you for your work in the Pilgrim's Progress article. I wanted to do exactly what you did in writing an article on the Pilgrim's Progress opera of Ralph Vaughn Williams. I am so pleased as one who is a Pilgrim's Progress aficionado. Cheers, drboisclair 14:52, 1 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Greetings. I have removed your RfA from the main RfA page because you did not sign it, nor have you answered the questions. The acceptance is required, and although the questions are optional, I'm afraid you will recieve an unforgiving reception if you do not address those. Please repost once you have done so. Cheers! Adding image tags for minor characters in tintin

[edit]

Thank you for adding the image copyright tags for thw images in Minor characters in Tintin. I am a relatively new wikipedian and did not really knew the rules of copyright tagging when I uploaded those images. Now I regularly add tags.

Dwaipayanc

I see that you have removed the badJPEG tag from Image:CSDP.jpg, saying that JPEG is the only available format. This may be true, but ideally someone on Wikipedia can redraw this image as a PNG or SVG. That's really what we're trying to achieve here, though the wording on the template might not be quite right yet. I've put the tag back on, so that this image is placed on a "to-do" list of sorts. If you still disagree with me, please let me know. —Bkell 19:26, 11 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, you had some edits on the article Certified Software Development Professional. Unfortunately, while trying to verify the facts, I noticed that the article borrowed the text from the offical webpage. Thus, I have tagged copyvio in accordance to Wikipedia's policy. Please let me know if you have any problems/concerns. Thank you. Regards, --Hurricane111 22:18, 15 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Fair use

[edit]

Re: Hillbilly. I can't see how an image of a character from the Simpsons would constitute fair use on an article about hillbillies, but I've asked for second opinions. / Fred-Chess 17:22, 25 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I have responded on Talk:Hillbilly (and removed the image again). Bishonen | talk 19:25, 25 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Image Tagging Image:M777.jpg

[edit]
Warning sign
This image may be deleted.

Thanks for uploading Image:M777.jpg. I notice the image page currently doesn't specify who created the image, so the copyright status is therefore unclear. If you have not created the image yourself then you need to argue that we have the right to use the image on Wikipedia (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the image yourself then you should also specify where you found it, i.e., in most cases link to the website where you got it, and the terms of use for content from that page.

If the image also doesn't have a copyright tag then you must also add one. If you created/took the picture then you can use GFDL to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the image qualifies as fair use, please read fair use, and then use a tag such as article name or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair_use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other images, please check that you have specified their source and copyright tagged them, too. You can find a list of image pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any unsourced and untagged images will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. Stan 03:32, 15 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Homer on your userpage

[edit]

Hi. I'm afraid I've had to remove the image of Homer Simpson from your userpage, as displaying it there is a violation of the new more strict Fair Use policy. Please see WP:FUC: "Fair use images should only be used in the article namespace. Used outside article space, they are often enough not covered under the fair use doctrine. They should never be used on templates (including stub templates and navigation boxes) or on user pages." Sorry about that. Bishonen | talk 23:56, 19 January 2006 (UTC).[reply]

Hello

[edit]

Hejsan. I just noticed that we share almost the same wikipedia username (and surname), live in the same city and work in the same field. How's that for a coincidence? Anyway, I just inserted a small notice to my userpage that I am not you, hoping to forestall any potential confusion (not that there has been any, to my knowledge). Image Tagging for Image:Bullshit2.jpg

[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Bullshit2.jpg. The image has been identified as not specifying the source and creator of the image, which is required by Wikipedia's policy on images. If you don't indicate the source and creator of the image on the image's description page, it may be deleted some time in the next seven days.

For more information on using images, see the following pages:

your better picture: Image:Kronborg castle2.jpg

[edit]

Hello Abelson! I've seen you replaced my picture Image:Helsingor Kronborg.jpg with yours. This is the freedom the GNU license gives. But the comment you wrote - replaced with better photo - did hurt me a little. I know it's not perfect. I'd do better in the same situation today. But your image has the resolution of a old mobile phone camera. The wheather was not so nice the composition a bit random style and there is a strong tint to cyan and blue (other pictures of you have the same tint). Whatever you do don't tell me your picture is better. Regards --Ikiwaner 20:45, 8 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Orphaned fair use image (Image:Rawlings plasma.jpg)

[edit]
Warning sign
This media may be deleted.

Thanks for uploading Image:Rawlings plasma.jpg. I notice the 'image' page currently specifies that the image can be used under a fair use license. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any fair use images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. —Bkell (talk) 08:22, 3 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Sure, go ahead and delete it. I just wanted to see an image in the baseball bat article. abelson 09:02, 3 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. I decided to reduce the image size of Image:Los santos.jpg due to fair use policy stating that images should be submitted in a small or "web-resolution" size (due to copyright reasons and possible abuse of high-res images). There hasn't been a consensus on the standard size for fair use images, but estimates put it between 180px to 400px. In the case of full screen images, I decided to opt for a 500px image width as a standard, because some details may be lost if the image is too small. It really depends on what is in the image to consider the amount of reduction in image size.

Hope you don't mind. :) ╫ 25 ◀RingADing▶ 16:13, 22 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Image:H340.jpg

[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:H340.jpg. I notice the 'image' page specifies that the image is being used under fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first fair use criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed image could reasonably be found or created. If you believe this image is not replaceable, please:

 1. Go to the image description page and edit it to add Replaceable fair use disputed, without deleting the original Replaceable fair use template.
 2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace the fair use image by finding a freely licensed image of its subject or by taking a picture of it yourself.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our fair use criteria. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that any fair use images which are replaceable by free-licensed alternatives will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. --Sherool (talk) 11:49, 23 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I own an iRiver H340 and I will take a picture of it this weekend and post it. That should resolve the issue. abelson 20:35, 23 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I have added a "prod" template to the article Pluck, suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process. All contributions are appreciated, but I don't believe it satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and I've explained why in the deletion notice (see also "What Wikipedia is not" and Wikipedia's deletion policy). Please either work to improve the article if the topic is worthy of inclusion in Wikipedia, or, if you disagree with the notice, discuss the issues at its talk page. Removing the deletion notice will prevent deletion through the proposed deletion process, but the article may still be sent to Articles for Deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached, or if it matches any of the speedy deletion criteria. Unspecified source for Image:James_Duncan_Davidson.jpg

[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:James_Duncan_Davidson.jpg. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, then you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, then a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a restatement of that website's terms of use of its content, is usually sufficient information. However, if the copyright holder is different from the website's publisher, then their copyright should also be acknowledged.

As well as adding the source, please add a proper copyright licensing tag if the file doesn't have one already. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the GFDL-self-no-disclaimers tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Fair use, use a tag such as article name or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the image is copyrighted under a non-free license (per Wikipedia:Fair use) then the image will be deleted 48 hours after 15:00, 25 March 2007 (UTC). If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. MECUtalk 15:00, 25 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not.

If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the GFDL-self tag can be used to release it under the GFDL.

If the image is copyrighted under a non-free license (per Wikipedia:Fair use) then the image will be deleted 48 hours after 00:00, 4 July 2007 (UTC). Orphaned non-free image (Image:Lockon.jpg)

[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Lockon.jpg. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Speedy deletion of Metacortex

[edit]

A tag has been placed on Metacortex, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia per speedy deletion criterion G1.

Under the criteria for speedy deletion, articles that do not meet basic Wikipedia criteria may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as an appropriate article, and if you can indicate why the subject of this article is appropriate, you may contest the tagging. To do this, add hangon on the top of the article and leave a note on the article's talk page explaining your position. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would confirm its subject's notability under the guidelines.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion. To do this, add hangon on the top of the page (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag) and leave a note on the page's talk page explaining your position. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself. Wildthing61476 14:11, 26 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Disputed fair use rationale for Image:Hschamberlain2.jpg

[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Hschamberlain2.jpg. However, there is a concern that the rationale you have provided for using this image under "fair use" may be invalid. Please read the instructions at Wikipedia:Non-free content carefully, then go to the image description page and clarify why you think the image qualifies for fair use. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it will be deleted within a couple of days according to our criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot (talk) 06:51, 1 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for uploading Image:Nrj.gif. You've indicated that the image is being used under a claim of fair use, but you have not provided an adequate explanation for why it meets Wikipedia's requirements for such images. In particular, for each page the image is used on, the image must have an explanation linking to that page which explains why it needs to be used on that page. Can you please check

 • That there is a non-free use rationale on the image's description page for each article the image is used in.
 • That every article it is used on is linked to from its description page.

Notability of Zinat Pirzadeh

[edit]

A tag has been placed on Zinat Pirzadeh requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done because the article, which appears to be about a real person, organization (band, club, company, etc.), or web content, does not indicate how or why the subject is notable: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, articles that do not indicate the subject's importance or significance may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable. If this is the first page that you have created, then you should read the guide to writing your first article.

If you think that you can assert the notability of the subject, you may contest the deletion by adding hangon to the top of the article (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the article's talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the article meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would confirm the subject's notability under Wikipedia guidelines.

For guidelines on specific types of articles, you may want to check out our criteria for biographies, for web sites, for bands, or for companies. Feel free to leave a note on my talk page if you have any questions about this. Kingpin13 (talk) 20:49, 16 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

An editor has nominated one or more articles which you have created or worked on, for deletion. The nominated article is List of Ben & Jerry's flavors. We appreciate your contributions, but the nominator doesn't believe that the article satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion and has explained why in his/her nomination (see also Wikipedia:Notability and "What Wikipedia is not").

Your opinions on whether the article meets inclusion criteria and what should be done with the article are welcome; please participate in the discussion(s) by adding your comments to Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/List of Ben & Jerry's flavors. Please be sure to sign your comments with four tildes (~~~~).

You may also edit the article during the discussion to improve it but should not remove the articles for deletion template from the top of the article; such removal will not end the deletion debate.

Please note: This is an automatic notification by a bot. I have nothing to do with this article or the deletion nomination, and can't do anything about it. --Erwin85Bot (talk) 01:07, 11 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

A tag has been placed on Sankt Hans hill requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A1 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is a very short article providing little or no context to the reader. Please see Wikipedia:Stub for our minimum information standards for short articles. Also please note that articles must be on notable subjects and should provide references to reliable sources that verify their content. You may wish to consider using a Wizard to help you create articles - see the Article Wizard.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding hangon to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Lastly, please note that if the page does get deleted, you can contact one of these admins to request that they userfy the page or have a copy emailed to you. Notice

The file File:Spandau castle.jpg has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Orphaned, low-quality photo; better free alternatives exist

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the file's talk page.

Please consider addressing the issues raised. Removing will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and files for discussion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion.
