S.E.E. Question

[edit]

Qaz, I'm so sorry I didn't get back to you on that S.E.E. question. I didn't even notice it until today. My comments on the article say that teachers are switching to Signed English to explain S.E.E. There are two different hybrids. S.E.E has the same order (English) as Signed English, but S.E.E. has signs for verb tenses like the "ing" in "going". Signed English, however, does not use signs for "ing" "ed" and so on. Here's an example. Suppose a teacher is explaining the sentence "You are going." She will sign it in S.E.E. first. If she sees that the students don't understand, she will switch to Signed English to explain what she just said in S.E.E. because the students and the teacher are more familiar Signed English. In Signed English she might sign:

YOU [points finger]
ARE [using the sign "true" while mouthing the word, then spelling A-R-E]
GOING [signs "GO", then spells the letters "ING"]

However, if the kids don't understand either the S.E.E. explanation of "You are going" or Signed English explanation of "You are going", the students will gather after class and work out the problem, maybe successfully, maybe not, in ASL. As sentences become more complex the switching from S.E.E. to Signed English to ASL becames a bloody nightmare. I have a hearing friend who learned to sign from a deaf guy who taught him S.E.E. signs but told him the signs were ASL. It's unnerving for me to try and sign with him. He's *ADAMENT* that he's signing correctly. I finally stopped using signs with him because he never knew the difference between ASL signs and SEE signs. My experience is that native signers will almost never correct a hearing person's signs because they have the same feeling about doing so that hearing people have about correcting a person's spoken language. They think it's rude or inappropriate, or they just don't want to get on the bad side of someone who seems willing to communicate using signs. It's a dilemma.

Does that help? Ray Foster 18:42, Apr 13, 2005 (UTC)

User language boxes for sign language

[edit]

Hello :)

I just created user language boxes for sign language, similar to the ones that exist for spoken languages. You may like to have a look. Any feedback is of course welcome!

You made an article for Pro-Ana when we already had one at Pro-ana. I looked over what you wrote and it seemed to duplicate what was already at the article we already had so I made the one redirect to the other. If you feel something is not in the article it redirects to, add it or tell me what you think it is missing if you do not know how. By the way, it is good to sign your edits on talk pages. You can do so by ending the comment with four tilde marks. Qaz 00:46, 27 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, saw your note on Journalist's page. I note you've been here for an incredibly long time. Cool. Anyway, there's stuff about sigs here: m:Help:Preferences. Regards—encephalon 12:23, 28 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

To get you sig 'pretty', all you have to do is format it with different colours. Im gonna make a fake one for you just to show you an example: Qaz | talk.
You can now go from here changing the colours or any combination; the colours are the numbers. you can find a buch of colour codes here. After you have fixed it, you copy the combination and go to your preferences, place them in the "Nickname" bar. Then click "Raw signatures...". After you have done this, any time you use your four tildes, it will look fancy. hope that helps. If you are still confused, contact me. →Journalist >>talk<< 16:34, 28 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Where The Heart Is

[edit]

There's just no real rerason to delete it. I guess it's one of those things that is automatically redirected if typed into a search box, but that doesn't apply if someone were to make a link Where The Heart Is (if the redirect is deleted, you'll notice that link turn red). Even if there is no such link now, someone could make one. The general rule of thumb is that redirects are cheap, and just because something doesn't link via that redirect isn't a reason to delete it. It's by no means the most important decision I've made, but it's totally harmless and potentially useful, so there was really no valid reason for deletion. -R. fiend 11:31, 8 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

The reason I put up the delete tag is because for some reason you can type in the name of the article in all lowercase and yet you still trigger the redirect which makes no sense and displays the name of the article in a way contrary to naming conventions at the top when you did not make that mistake. Try it out and see what I mean. Qaz (talk) 11:35, 8 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]
I see, but I really don't see how it matters. -R. fiend 16:50, 8 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

TOP SCIENTISTS

[edit]

Thanks for the cleanup of the article.I was going to attempt it over in a few days but really appreciate your help. And it is not a copyright violation as only the names have been cited and not the text.JK

Your welcome. The article --Top 1000 Scientists: From the Beginning of Time to 2000 AD-- is going to need a lot of work because of that list. The reason is that the names are in alphabetical order (by last name) in the list as it appears now and they do not match our article naming conventions. This means you have to use an editing trick to fix each and every entry. You can see when you press edit how I had to use a pipe in order to get the link to show the name one way and link to something else. When using a pipe what comes first is where it really links to and after the pipe is what is shown on the page. I would be glad to have some help as it is a long list. I was even thinking of not including the list at all in the article. Qaz (talk) 08:01, 9 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Not including the list would take care of that persons copyvio concerns too. Qaz (talk) 08:04, 9 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks!I realise what you say now.You can see I am new to Wikipedia and would very much welcome your help and guidance.I happen to be a law grad as well so know that there are no copyright violations here.Names by definition cannot be copyrighted;ony text can invite sanctions. The book contains a voluminous biographical note on each entry and would have invited sanctions had I included them rather than the names.I think most if not all the netries have already an article here. The list I feel is necessary as people would want to know the names.I await your advice.JK

I hope I have reassured you about the copyright aspect. To be doubly sure I consulted one of my seniors and he concurs.eg.you can browse thru the Nobel winners site(or for that matter american academy of arts and sciences site as it is regarded as second mostt prestigious)and include all the names-but not the text.JK I would be dlighted to help-but would appreciate guidance.I am also concerned about vanadalism-someone may wish to insert more names which would b e inappropriate.Do you feel a subtitle like SCIENTISTS ROLL OF HONOR would be proper?JK

I have resumed editing the list of names (many links to fix). I just lost the changes to about 6 names because of a careless click with my mouse *grrr* but anyway, I will help you to clean this article up. Although you are certainly free to edit and participate in Wikipedia I encourage you to register here so that your effort can be credited to you should you ever in the future want to become more involved with Wikipedia or even if you want your voice to be given more weight in votes and such if you ever find reason to participate in them here. Qaz (talk) 06:51, 12 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

BTW, you should ad to the article more about how the author selected the people. For example, who exactly did he poll, just faculty, faculty and students, just science departments, whole university ... I could go on with this. You get the idea. Qaz (talk)

Thanks.According to the book the author polled the science faulty.I am a little worried about editing now as I fear I may end up vandalising.I shall register today and watch out for the technique you follow before trying out my hand at editing. Thanks once again.JK 13th Oct.2005

I get the technique now how to edit.Sorry for giving you so much trouble and thanks for your patience.I shall try assisting you with some competence now.,JK 19th Oct.

I just was intimated of a major error I have committed-while copying the names,I inadvertantly missed out one-Joseph LAGRANGE(1766-1813).I am sorry! It was a major error on my part.I am scared to effect any modification as it may appear to be vandalistic and would very much appreciate your help.As the name appears in the book,I think it would have to be included.Do I have to prepare the list all over again? And I double checked with the senior partner at my law firm-in a book that is about 400 pages long listing the proper names is in no way suggestive of copyright violation as Dream guy has suggested.JK 19th November 2005

Near Vertical Incidence Skywave

[edit]

Hey, I cleaned-up the Near Vertical Incidence Skywave page to make it appropriate for Wikiepdia. I removed the Wifi stuff, and added a simple explanation of what NVIS really is.

basically, NVIS is a radio propogation mode that is especially useful in communicating over the horizon in circumstances where VHF isn't useful. Sometimes you want to communicate with a station on shortwave thats too far for groundwave and too far for traditional skywave. This is called the skip zone. So, basically, NVIS allows you to communicate into the skip zone. This is useful for emergency or mmilitary applications.

I have no idea where the fellow was going when he wrote it, but you may want to take another look at it and see what I did.

Rational Recovery

[edit]

Hi- Many thanks! David Justin 00:45, 14 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Your welcome. Qaz (talk) 01:43, 14 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the comments on my user talk page. I certainly don't take offense! I'm delighted someone else is interested in working on the article. See User:Andrewa/creed.

However, let me explain what I meant by saying "in English". These are (were) both examples taken from English. It isn't assumed that just because this is English Wikipedia that everything we talk about will also be English, far from it, we have an article on the German language for example, and one of the examples in the verb article is taken from Spanish or Portuguese, unfortunately it doesn't say which!

I think that the verb article would be improved a great deal if more actual examples from other languages were given, this has been the custom in most linguistics books I have seen.

Similarly, we should add examples from several languages to the article on ejaculations, IMO. The French ben (pronounced as a very short postnasalised bah) is the best example I can think of outside of English. I can't see that the English examples shouldn't stay too, but if you found them confusing then ipso facto they were. See if you can do better. Andrewa 03:09, 15 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I agree wholeheartedly about not everything having to be about English even though it is in English. It was the sentence structure more than anything that confused me. It seemed to be a comment out of nowhere just saying that yes, this is English. With more context it would be fine and as you point out, provide an improvement. Qaz (talk) 04:31, 15 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Root32

[edit]

Does it not take just a bit more than someone saying they own it to remove a copyvio? As can be seen I post from Canada and what's to stop me claiming to be Kenneth Thomson, 2nd Baron Thomson of Fleet and anything published in the Globe and Mail can be put on Wikipedia (or something a little more sensible)? CambridgeBayWeather 13:36, 15 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

As far as I understand it, it is enough to stop a speedy. It can still be sent to afd where the standards are a little different. To stop a copyvio speedy though I think all you need is a claim of ownership much like you only need a claim of notablity to stop a nn-bio speedy. In both cases, they may die in the AfD process though where things are vetted a bit more. If you find I am wrong, straighten me out on this please. Qaz (talk) 13:48, 15 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]
I didn't really know as I've never seen anyone claim ownership of a speed copyvio. I'm tired and it's almost quitting time 7:50 am and it's -20 outside. CambridgeBayWeather 13:50, 15 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

re: Adville

[edit]

It sure looks like a long list of ads but it could be a useful item. If it was limited to the top 2 or 3 per country it wouldn't be so bad but things like the addition of root32 which are probably not notable don't help it. I supect that anyone removing things is likely to start an edit war. CambridgeBayWeather 13:49, 15 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, I can see it being useful if it restricted itself to one or two... possibly the top three in each country but it is getting out of hand over there at DSL around the world -- Qaz (talk) 13:53, 15 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Within a week or so you will feel right at home with the extra tools. What you can do is continue on the trend that have made you a successful candidate for the job. After reading Wikipedia:Administrators' how-to guide and Wikipedia:Administrators' reading list, play extra special attention to the Recent Changes section and take appropriate action: revert vandalism (that will be easy with the roll back button), warn editors, block IPs and users and welcome newbies. Also, try to place on your watchlist the following pages: Wikipedia:Administrator intervention against vandalism, Wikipedia:Vandalism in Progress and Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard. The following links should also be helpful (you could place them on your userpage like I have):

Try also to stay in discussions. Vote on RFAs and make your voice heard on talkpages. I was a bit confused at first, but after a few practise, I felt right at home. Hope that helps. Good luck. Now, going back on My Wikibreak :). Oran e (t) (c) (@) 19:00, 20 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Deaf-mute

[edit]

Hi Qaz. I'm seeking opinions and possible support for an issue in which I'm in a debate with other Wikipedians. I'm trying to change indiscrimant use of the term "deaf-mute" in describing deaf people in general. To see some comments related to the issue, see Talk:The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter, as well as my own Talk page, User talk:Ward3001. You can also follow the links to other discussions. Right now I'm about the only person addressing the issue because deaf people are such a small minority. Other Wikipedians, with apparently no prior knowledge of the issue, are reverting my edits. If you're interested in expressing your opinion, feel free to do so. If you wish to discuss further please leave me a message on my Talk page. Thanks. Ward3001 19:31, 4 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I will read what happened at the links you gave, thanks. Qaz 12:46, 5 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
MANY THANKS! Now, I'm again asking those who commented against using "deaf-mute" to once again help me out. There is a persistent user who has repeatedly reverted "deaf" to "deaf-mute", and has again reverted (and probably will do so again until this issue is mediated [in process] or arbitrated). So far I'm the only one who has reverted it back to "deaf". If others could please put The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter on your watchlist and revert when necessary, I think it would have a much bigger impact. Just be careful not to violate the 3-revert-rule. As I'm writing this, the article needs reversion. There are four instances in the article where "deaf" is being reverted to "deaf-mute". I would greatly appreciate others in addition to myself making the reverts back to "deaf". As always, many thanks. Ward3001 13:32, 5 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Re: Good Job

[edit]

Thanks for your praise, but I'm sure any of us who stepped forward would have done the same. I'm sure there are (many?) other articles that use the term "deaf-mute" (or other erroneous terms) indiscriminantly, but I've had trouble finding them. So far I've only found Babel and The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter, only because I had seen both films. The article on Stephen King's novel The Stand uses the term, but that was such an unrealistic portrayal of a deaf person that I'm willing to concede the character might literally be mute. Anyway, thanks for your help. Ward3001 01:24, 7 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Note regarding mediation

[edit]

24.0.97.119 ignored the mediation request (neither agreeing nor disagreeing), yet continues to revert "deaf" to "deaf-mute". Please continue to monitor The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter. If this continues, I will ask everyone's opinion about seeking formal arbitration from Wikipedia. Arbitration results in a binding decision. Thanks. Ward3001 00:38, 9 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Greetings. There is going to be a Washington DC Wikipedia meetup on next Saturday, July 21st at 5pm in DC. Since you are listed in Category:Wikipedians_in_Maryland, I thought I'd invite you to come. I'm sorry about the short notice for the meeting. Hopefully we'll do somewhat better in that regard next time. If you can't come but want to make sure that you are informed of future meetings be sure to list yourself under "but let me know about future events", and if you don't want to get any future direct notices \(like this one\), you can list yourself under "I'm not interested in attending any others either" on the DC meetup page.--Gmaxwell 00:26, 15 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I've nominated this article for deletion. It still has no sources besides the book itself, and having got hold of a copy of the book, I find that it actually makes no claims to be derived from an authoritative survey, so I see no notability. Since you've edited the article or participated in the old AfD you might like to comment. As there has been confusion about the book's actual content, I'd be happy to back up all the assertions I've made by Emailing you scans of the relevant pages. Your question from 2 years ago about the holton arms school

[edit]

You were enquiring about how holton could have been founded out of a pushcart. I attend the school & i know my reply is late but basically Ms. Holton & Ms. Arms were employed at the same school when their future goal to start their own girls school reached their superior's ears. The woman had them fired immediatly & they packed what little school supplies they owned themselves & bought a push cart from a hotdog vendor on the street to carry it in. Because they had no means of income the woman decided they would start their school from what they had in that cart. Later, a parent from the school they used to work at allowed them to use his house as their school building. So while Holton did not techniqually begin in a push cart, the establishment of the school (though the ladies didn't know where they would establish the building) was done while they had nothing but their items & a push cart.

I hope this wasnt TOO confusing of an explination, —Preceding unsigned comment added by Abc42560 (talkcontribs) 04:04, 31 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry it took so long to get back to you. If you still have questions let me know. Qaz (talk) 22:08, 17 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The article Paddy Ladd has been proposed for deletion because under Wikipedia policy, all biographies of living persons created after March 18, 2010, must have at least one source that directly supports material in the article.

If you created the article, please don't take offense. Instead, consider improving the article. For help on inserting references, see Wikipedia:Referencing for beginners or ask at Wikipedia:Help desk. Once you have provided at least one reliable source, you may remove the {{prod blp}} tag. Please do not remove the tag unless the article is sourced. If you cannot provide such a source within ten days, the article may be deleted, but you can request that it be undeleted when you are ready to add one. Logan Talk Contributions 05:31, 11 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I added a source and took down the tag. Qaz (talk) 06:26, 11 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

License tagging for File:FatHeadPoster.jpg

[edit]

Thanks for uploading File:FatHeadPoster.jpg. You don't seem to have indicated the license status of the image. Wikipedia uses a set of image copyright tags to indicate this information; to add a tag to the image, select the appropriate tag from this list, click on this link, then click the "Edit" tab at the top of the page and add the tag to the image's description. If there doesn't seem to be a suitable tag, the image is probably not appropriate for use on Wikipedia.

For help in choosing the correct tag, or for any other questions, leave a message on Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. Thank you for your cooperation. --ImageTaggingBot (talk) 21:05, 21 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I added Non-free promotional tag Qaz (talk) 21:10, 21 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Phytonutrients, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G11 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the page seems to be unambiguous advertising which only promotes a company, product, group, service or person and would need to be fundamentally rewritten in order to become an encyclopedia article. Please read the guidelines on spam and Wikipedia:FAQ/Business for more information.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, contest the deletion by clicking on the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion," which appears inside of the speedy deletion ({{db-...}}) tag (if no such tag exists, the page is no longer a speedy delete candidate). Doing so will take you to the talk page where you will find a pre-formatted place for you to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. You can also visit the the page's talk page directly to give your reasons, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, you can contact one of these administrators to request that the administrator userfy the page or email a copy to you. DGG ( talk ) 01:38, 18 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The article Hearing (person) has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

This article is a too-wordy and uncited expansion of a dictionary definition, describing 'hearing' as the opposite of 'deaf'. Per WP:NOTDICT, the article should be deleted.

While all contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Coen Bros.

[edit]

Blood Simple also has achieved "cult film" status. So, the choice as to which should be mentioned and which left out comes down to consensus amongst editors. The point is, the lede should not be burdened with film titles. Four or five, at most, is sufficient. If you want to start a talk page discussion, to see what other editors think, feel free to do so. ---RepublicanJacobiteTheFortyFive 17:32, 20 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Apologies for templating a regular, and this is ancient, but while trying to track down, ironically, the copyright status of works by poet laureates, I realized much of the material on this page is simply copied from the LOC. It just now occurs to me that this may make the text pd, but even if so, it is not properly referenced.--SPhilbrick(Talk) 13:59, 4 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

MSU Interview

[edit]

Dear Qaz,

My name is Jonathan Obar user:Jaobar, I'm a professor in the College of Communication Arts and Sciences at Michigan State University and a Teaching Fellow with the Wikimedia Foundation's Education Program. This semester I've been running a little experiment at MSU, a class where we teach students about becoming Wikipedia administrators. Not a lot is known about your community, and our students (who are fascinated by wiki-culture by the way!) want to learn how you do what you do, and why you do it. A while back I proposed this idea (the class) to the communityHERE, where it was met mainly with positive feedback. Anyhow, I'd like my students to speak with a few administrators to get a sense of admin experiences, training, motivations, likes, dislikes, etc. We were wondering if you'd be interested in speaking with one of our students.

So a few things about the interviews:

  • Interviews will last between 15 and 30 minutes.
  • Interviews can be conducted over skype (preferred), IRC or email. (You choose the form of communication based upon your comfort level, time, etc.)
  • All interviews will be completely anonymous, meaning that you (real name and/or pseudonym) will never be identified in any of our materials, unless you give the interviewer permission to do so.
  • All interviews will be completely voluntary. You are under no obligation to say yes to an interview, and can say no and stop or leave the interview at any time.
  • The entire interview process is being overseen by MSU's institutional review board (ethics review). This means that all questions have been approved by the university and all students have been trained how to conduct interviews ethically and properly.

Bottom line is that we really need your help, and would really appreciate the opportunity to speak with you. If interested, please send me an email at obar@msu.edu (to maintain anonymity) and I will add your name to my offline contact list. If you feel comfortable doing so, you can post your nameHERE instead.

If you have questions or concerns at any time, feel free to email me at obar@msu.edu. I will be more than happy to speak with you.

Thanks in advance for your help. We have a lot to learn from you.

Sincerely,

Jonathan Obar --Jaobar (talk) — Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.11.206.39 (talk) 03:51, 21 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Notification of pending suspension of administrative permissions due to inactivity

[edit]

Information icon Following a community discussion in June 2011, consensus was reached to provisionally suspend the administrative permissions of users who have been inactive for one year (i.e. administrators who have not made any edits or logged actions in over one year). As a result of this discussion, your administrative permissions will be removed pending your return if you do not return to activity within the next month. If you wish to have these permissions reinstated should this occur, please post to the Wikipedia:Bureaucrats' noticeboard and the userright will be restored per the re-sysopping process (i.e. as long as the attending bureaucrats are reasonably satisfied that your account has not been compromised, that your inactivity did not have the effect of evading scrutiny of any actions which might have led to sanctions, and that you have not been inactive for a three year period of time). If you remain inactive for a three year period of time, including the present year you have been inactive, you will need to request reinstatement at WP:RFA. This removal of access is procedural only, and not intended to reflect negatively upon you in any way. We wish you the best in future endeavors, and thank you for your past administrative efforts. Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page.
