[edit]From List of English words of Irish origin:
- quiz: word allegedly invented by a Richard Daly, a Dublin theatre owner, in the late 18th century as result of a bet that he would introduce a new word to the English language overnight.
- This is a sort of an "urban legend" and a catchy "quiz question" too ;). Though most dictionaries quote the origin of this word as unknown, a popular theory regarding the word's origin has been this bet/invention tale. This bet was believd to have taken place in 1791 and Daly hired a bunch of street urchins to write the word “quiz”(meaningless then) on walls around Dublin, and within 24 hours the word caught up. But there are evidences of usage of this word even before 1791 in literature, but with completely different meanings. Not sure if we can add this to the wikipedia article. - It definitely should be in the Quiz article, but first there probably should be some verification (and, if needed, a correction to the List of English words of Irish origin article). It's times like this that I which that I owed the CD-ROM version of the OED. I have an old version of the Shorter Oxford, so I will have to check that to see what it says.
Etymology
[edit]I just added an unedit bit on the etymology of the word. --Brazucs 05:55, 9 March 2006 (UTC)
Links
[edit]I think the dmoz listing of links is inferior to the listing of links that was here before and that the list should be brought back with the bad links removed. I don't think deleting them all solves anything so propose to restore them. Jw6aa 10:43, 4 October 2006 (UTC)
- The dmoz listing seems to comprise daft "personality" quizzes. It does not replace links which give lists of active quizzes and quiz leagues. -- Ian Dalziel 19:57, 4 October 2006 (UTC)
- I agree with Jw6aa and Ian Dalziel on this one. The dmoz listing is useless, please delete it and reinstore some of the previous links. Not all were super-relevant but many linked to quiz leagues and competitions and were valid. StevenDC 16:24, 5 October 2006 (UTC)
- There seems to be a consensus to remove the silly dmoz listings and replace them by the quiz competitions and quiz league links that were listed previously. StevenDC 07:54, 7 October 2006 (UTC)
- Hi everyone.
- Please add the quality links to dmoz, which exists for that purpose. Wikipedia is not supposed to be a web directory or link clearinghouse. This page happens to be popular for linkspammers, so it is easier to make a policy (e.g. with Sudoku and Trivia) against non-notable external links than to justify the inclusion of some and exclusion of others.
- There is a difference between external links that contribute to scholarship of the subject (or serve as references), and those that point to examples of the subject. The latter are not necessary in an encyclopedia.
- PS: There is a dmoz section on "Trivia," maybe that would be more relevant? 68.183.123.165 05:48, 13 October 2006 (UTC) [its all non sence not verthy]Italic text
Australia
[edit]- It seems strange for there to be a special section about Australia, especially when what is written is in no way unique to Australia.
- Suggest removing it, or just adding the description of a quiz night to the main article Jamierc 10:50, 12 April 2007 (UTC)
I noticed you've removed all Australian conetnt from this page. It seems strange for you to have done that. The information provided was factually accurate and unique. Quiz nights are a popular form of fundraising/entertainment in Australia. I notice Quiz night as a page title links to Pub quiz. In Australia these are never called pub quiz. Although they may occasionally be held in a pub. Ozdaren 13:33, 15 May 2007 (UTC)
History of the quiz
[edit]We have a history of the word quiz, but no obvious information on quizzes or general knowledge games before 1900.

Online Quizzes
[edit]I'm taking the liberty of refactoring the Other Quizzes parts about online quizzes into that article. It isn't much so shouldn't be an issue.--Boredjohn (talk) 20:07, 7 May 2008 (UTC)
Second sentence is confusing
[edit]The second sentence says that a quiz is a test of your knowledge "about a certain subjet". This is confusing. Many quizzes are tests of general knowledge. The BBC programme Mastermind (TV series) has questions on general knowledge as well as questions on the partipant's chosen subjects!Vorbee (talk) 11:05, 2 November 2017 (UTC)
